ISL returns to India after nearly five decades, marking the first homecoming of the symposium since the historic ISL 1980 in New Delhi.
India is one of the most landslide-prone countries in the world, with nearly 15% of its geographical area susceptible to landslide hazards. The Himalayan Region, the North-Eastern states, the Western Ghats, the Nilgiris, and several parts of the Eastern Ghats experience frequent slope failures triggered by intense rainfall, earthquakes, anthropogenic interventions, mining activities, and rapid infrastructure development. Every year, landslides result in significant loss of human lives, damage to critical infrastructure, disruption of transportation corridors, and adverse socio-economic impacts on vulnerable communities. With increasing climate variability and expanding developmental activities in mountainous terrains, the frequency and complexity of landslide events continue to grow, making landslide risk reduction a national priority.

Thirteen symposia, twelve countries, forty-four years and now, a second Indian
chapter in the story ISL began.
It is my great privilege, as Vice President (Asia) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and President of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), to warmly invite the global landslide community to the 15th International Symposium on Landslides (ISL 2028), to be held in Kochi, India.
The International Symposium on Landslides has long been the premier forum for sharing advances in landslide science, engineering, risk assessment, monitoring, and mitigation. As landslide hazards continue to intensify under the combined effects of climate change, urban expansion, and infrastructure development, the symposium offers a timely platform to exchange knowledge, showcase innovations, and strengthen international collaboration towards building safer and more resilient communities.
Hosted by the Indian Geotechnical Society, ISL 2028 will bring together leading researchers, engineers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry professionals from around the world for a comprehensive technical programme featuring keynote lectures, technical sessions, workshops, exhibitions, and valuable networking opportunities.
Kochi, the gateway to Kerala, provides an ideal setting for this global gathering. Renowned for its rich cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and proximity to the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, the city reflects both the challenges and opportunities associated with landslide risk management in diverse terrains.
